The Russian Jewish Congress Expresses Deep Condolences on the Passing of Rudolf Verba Rudolf Verba was a survivor of the deadliest out of all the Nazi death camps, Aushwitz-Birkenau, and was able to escape from it with his friend, Alfred Weltzer in April, 1944. The two friends came to Slovakia and with the help of partisans and the local Jewish community sent a letter to the governments of the anti-Nazi coalition, witnessing the horrors of the death camps. The letter contained a detailed description of the territory and mechanisms of the death camp as well as the first number of victims – 1,765,000.
The Verba-Weltzer report was the first evidence of the atrocities of the Nazis and broke the silence making those in denial hear the voice of the Jewish people. The document made the world learn about the Auschwitz events as the symbol of Holocaust, the greatest tragedy in the history of mankind. In the course of many years Verba participated as a witness in trials of the Nazi criminals; his testimonies were a part of his life-long fight for justice and against the “brown plague”.
The Russian Jewish Congress extends deep condolences to the family and friends of Rudolf Verba. Blessings upon the memory of the Righteous.
