Russian and Swiss Businessmen Meet at Synagogue
Business-club of the Russian Jewish Congress held its regular meeting on June, 6. The meeting was timed to the visit of the delegation, representing the Swiss Chamber of Commerce, so it was attended by eminent Swiss businessmen. Corresponding topic of the meeting was: “Russia - Switzerland: Current state and perspectives of the economic relations”. Main speakers at the meeting were: Walter Fecherin - President of the Chamber of Commerce “Switzerland-Russia», Ambassador of Switzerland in Russia in years 2000-2004, and Adrian Lowenberger - Director of the European division of “Clariden Leu” Bank, one of the five largest Swiss banks. The meeting was presided by Vice-President of the Russian Jewish Congress Eugeny Satanovsky. Meeting of the Business-club members took place at refectory hall of the Big Choral Synagogue, and was arranged with participation of the Moscow Jewish congregation. Satanovsky started his opening speech with gratitudes to Senior Rabbi of Moscow Pinkhas Goldschmidt. He also mentioned that since the times of “Odessa stories” by I. Babel, Switzerland used to be the country of the dreams for Jews, and then yielded to the main speakers. Walter Fecherin informed the audience about current state of the Russian-Swiss economic relations. According to him, the relations now are at high level and keep on developing intensively. He said that volume of Russian exports to Switzerland for the moment amounted to $15 billion. The country is an important trade partner for Russia, being the seventh best in commodity turnover. More than 600 Swiss companies are working in Russia. At the same time, according to W. Fecherin, we have all the necessary prerequisites for more intense economic relations and turnover growth. Adrian Lowenberger confessed to be very glad to be among the Russian businessmen and to see Russian and Swiss flags together on the table. He mentioned that only a century ago Switzerland “poor in minerals and covered with forests” was a poor country. May be this factor has predetermined creation of the reliable banking system in Switzerland, the system that managed to attract considerable capitals from abroad. As a result Swiss banks has become, according to A. Lowenberger, a “national endow”, an internationally renown brand - together with Swiss cheese, chocolate and watches. Rabbi Pinchas Goldschmidt said that Moscow Choral Synagogue was receiving the RJC Business-club members for the first time, and expressed hope that this practice would go on. The meeting was also attended by Managing Vice-President of the RJC Nikolay Papirny, Vice-President Grigory Kroshner, Chairman of the KEROOR Zinovy Kogan and members of the RJC Business-club.
